Sunrise on Charleston Harbor |
|
Spring 2001. We
awoke before dawn aboard a 36' Cape Dory moored at City Marina.
Prowling the waterfront in the quiet dampness, we found a convenience store
just opening. Fresh coffee and snacks would fuel our morning paddle. Returning to our dock, we eased the kayaks into the water. It was a bit cool, but with little wind and calm waters. We paddled among the boats in the marina until we found our way into the channel. Staying close to shore, we made our way past the Coast Guard station and on towards the Battery. By now, a few fishing boats were awakening and heading to sea. Their wake was the only disturbance on a glassy harbor. The sun arose as we paddled from the Battery to James Island, where we landed to take a break. The gnats were pretty bad at James Island, so we did not stay very long. Paddling along the island, we made it to Fort Sumter before mid-morning. We walked around the fort, but it had not opened. As we left, we noticed the first boat of tourist coming out. We paddled back to the marina and had a late breakfast at the Variety Store Restaurant. That evening, we entertained guests aboard the Cape Dory.
